How Solar Energy Becomes Electricity: A 4-step process

1) Solar panels collect the sun's rays

The panels are photovoltaic (PV), which is a fancy word that basically means they’re able to make electrons really excited. The sunlight that the PV panels collect is then converted to direct current (DC).

2) The inverter converts the electricity

Commercial appliances all run on alternating current (AC). Because the solar panels produce DC, we need an inverter to—you guessed it—invert the current to AC. It’s like magic!

3) Electricity is used

Your home or business takes the electricity it requires to keep the lights on, make sure the fridge is cold, and binge Netflix shows.

4) Receive credit for your surplus electricity

The power you don’t need is credited to you and sent into the electric company's grid. This step is how you’re able to achieve that glorious $0 power bill!
